WELCOME TO AUSTRALIA

It’s diverse, laidback, wild, and as big as Europe, providing an eclectic hoard of experiences and endless space for isolation seekers, while the more cosmopolitan cities are home to cutting edge arts, music and cafe cultures.
Spectacular deserts, rainforests, waterfalls, canyons and a huge array of strange flora and fauna are just some of the reasons to go this distance, with white sand beaches stretching to infinity provide some of the best snorkelling, surfing, diving and lounging on the planet.

However, the place is HUGE, so unless you have infinite time you must limit your your itinerary and it’s going to cost you to get around. Planes and car hire are the most time effective way to travel Australia, but travelling long distances to some places expecting an interesting, lively culture and finding a dull, mall and beer dominated town can be depressing. Accommodation is not especially cheap, though you can rough it on a budget.
Winter [June - August] can be cold in the south, particularly if you were expecting to spend your days in a swim suit.
Australia’s deadly critters require considerable respect and attention and Outback flies can be incredibly persistent and irritating while leeches, ticks and mites acquired when hiking can lead to swellings, rashes or infections.

TINA ARENA ( Ta vie)

The story of Australia’s worst dry spell in the thousand years continues to astound. Last year we learned, “One farmer takes his life every four days”.This year over half of Australia’s agricultural land is in a declared drought.

How bad is it?

One Australian newspaper is reporting:

DROUGHT will become a redundant term as Australia plans for a permanently drier future, according to the nation’s urban water industries chief….

“The urban water industry has decided the inflows of the past will never return,” Water Services Association of Australia executive director Ross Young said. “We are trying to avoid the term ‘drought’ and saying this is the new reality.”

Aquatic Ecosystems

Preserving Aquatic Ecosystems

Only recently have some aquatic environments received protection in some parts of the world.  New marine sanctuaries that protect coral reefs and other sea life have been set aside in a growing number of countries.

In 1994, Australia, the United States and six other nations founded the International Coral Reef Initiative to encourage preservation of reefs endangered by pollution, overfishing and other causes.  In the future, sanctuaries and international agreements will provide major means of conserving these ecosystems.  Unfortunately, many of these sanctuaries allow commercial fishing and the collection of mollusks.

The value of aquatic ecosystems in preserving biodiversity is only beginning to be appreciated, aided by the growing popularity of bird-watching, scuba diving and coral reef tourist visits that are educating many people about the importance of protecting these fragile ecosystems.
